BENEFITS OF PFGA MEMBERSHIP

The Prairie Fruit Growers Association is a voluntary non-profit organization representing all Manitoba fruit crop growers since 1974. Full membership provides bulk plant buying power of high quality, disease free stock, to lower costs for members. Associate membership is available to allied trades people and those interested in this type of horticultural production. The Association is represented by seven elected member directors and three advisors; one each from Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Manitoba post-secondary educational institution.

PLANT ORDER DISCOUNT

The PFGA provides bulk plant buying power of high quality strawberry and raspberry stock to lower costs for members.

FREE MARKETING/ ADVERTISING

PFGA WEBSITE – The website is the primary media used by u-pick customers to find out which farms are open (updated daily during picking season), plus access to many berry recipes and general info on Manitoba’s fruit crops.

PFGA Display Promotions – Our professional display is used at Ag in the City, mall promotions, food markets, fairs, conferences and many other public events promoting our industry.

During the picking season, many different forms of advertising are used through PFGA: The Local Fare Magazine, radio and newspaper advertising.

PUBLIC AWARENESS

Create public awareness of the industry by providing press releases to urban and rural newspapers. Our promotions goals are to direct customers to your farm. Active members of AG in the Classroom.

GROWER EDUCATION

PFGA hosts events for the members throughout the year (Direct Farm Marketing Conference, Fruit Conference, extension workshops) on the latest fruit production and marketing information. The PFGA continues to work with On-Farm Food Safety Programs and Environmental Farm Plan programs to ensure that the public values Manitoba grown fruit not only for taste but as safe food products.

The PFGA publishes the 4-5 times per year the association newsletter, Manitoba Fruit Grower News. This newsletter keeps growers up to date on latest industry news, production practices, events, etc. Free Classified Ads in the newsletter are available to all PFGA members to advertise buy, sell equipment, land, etc.

A VOICE TO GOVERNMENT

PFGA provides a united voice to government, working in liaison with government officials to improve profitability and sustainability of our industry. Our efforts with MASC resulted in fruit crops being covered by crop insurance for the first time ever (strawberry & saskatoon establishment insurance, strawberry hail insurance). Federal and provincial governments consult with the PFGA on new legislation and programs that may impact on the industry.

MEDIA CONTACT

We are the main contact for news media for fruit related issues and events, the media look to the PFGA for grower contacts for various stories.

RESEARCH

The past fifteen + years PFGA has administrated and provided cash funding to Manitoba fruit crop research projects with a combined budget of over $0.75 Million. Growers associations like the PFGA are able to leverage 50-80% funding for projects. Fruit Crop Research = Increased Farm Profitability

FRUIT INDUSTRY CONTACTS

We bring together growers, food industry reps, marketers, and suppliers. All members receive the Fruit Grower Newsletter and Prairie Fruit Journal, keeping you up to date on industry news, conferences, research advances and promotional info. The PFGA are members of the Canadian Prairie Fruit Federation, North American Strawberry Growers Association and Canadian Horticulture Council.

MEMBERSHIP CLASSIFICATIONS

FULL MEMBERSHIP PRIVILEGES Full members are entitled to vote at the annual meeting, elect directors, order plants through the Association and may participate in advertising campaigns (brochures, website, etc.). Full members receive PFGA newsletter, Prairie Fruit Journal and MAFRI and AAFC extension information.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP PRIVILEGES Associate memberships are restricted to businesses and other grower associations. Fruit industry suppliers and other businesses receive a free insert per year in the newsletter (with directors approval) if requested, providing members with useful product information. Other grower group boards of directors are able to access PFGA news and events info through mailings of the PFGA Newsletter and Prairie Fruit Journal. This keeps other grower group directors’ up to date and avoid duplication of various activities.

TO EDUCATE MEMBERS, ACCESS QUALITY PLANTING STOCK, DIRECT RESEARCH AND DEVELOP MARKETS.

CODE OF PRACTICE

Members of the PFGA are expected to:

  1. Produce high quality nutritious food,
  2. Serve customers with courtesy and integrity,
  3. Adhere to production and food safety requirements of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Health Canada.
